Exile and Christian Suffering – Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost
With the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon in 586 BC, Israel began several centuries of life without Temple and God. In the midst of this suffering, Israel cried out to God in desperate hope that he would someday save them.

God promises David that his dynasty will reign forever. But when that dynasty dies out God's promise seems like it's been broken. But Jesus – David's greater son – conquers the universe through his death and resurrection and now sits on the throne of David forever.

As he did with Abraham, God commits himself through Moses to his people by making a covenant – a promise that he will be their God and they will be his people.
