Nathanael Meets Jesus – Second Sunday after the Epiphany
Nathanael was instantly attracted to Jesus because he knew him and accepted him. Jesus, using a strong parallel between the calling of Nathanael and the calling of Jacob in the book of Genesis, shows us that his love for us increases with his knowledge of us because he is a God who transforms us from deceitful to true Israel, from lost to forgiven.
The Baptism of Jesus and the New Creation
When God ordered his creation he did so by the power of his Holy Spirit, his image (in Adam & Eve), and his Word. When God orders his new creation, inaugurated at the baptism of Jesus, he also does it through his Spirit, his Word, and his image – Jesus, the express image of God himself.
The Young Jesus in the Temple – Second Sunday after Christmas
Recognizing our relationship with God as primary and sitting loose to all our other relationships liberates us to genuinely and deeply love the people in our lives in the power of the gospel.
Christmas Adoption – First Sunday after Christmas
Because Jesus became human, we have been redeemed, adopted, and made heirs of God. We are no longer outsiders, but have been deeply welcomed by the Trinity into their eternal relationship, which makes us the heirs of the whole universe with Jesus.
