Sabbath and Redemption – Seventh Sunday of Easter

In the book of Deuteronomy God commands his people to rest one day a week because they had been slaves in Egypt and he wants them to be free from a production-based slavery system designed to own and control them. And by learning to observe Sabbath, we too can experience the God-given freedom from being owned by money, work, and materialism, and find our acceptance in his love for us in Jesus.

Ascension

Jesus' ascension doesn't mean that he's no longer here; instead, Paul insists in his letter to the Ephesians that it means he now fills all things. In other words, Jesus can now be everywhere where his word is preached, his sacraments are celebrated, and his people are gathered in his name.

Sabbath and Creation – Fifth Sunday of Easter

God, by resting and enjoying his good work, has built the pattern of work and Sabbath rest into his creation. By faithfully observing God's command to cease from work, we learn to trust him and lean on him to provide for us; in other words, to learn how to live in our justification by faith.
